Teething 101: When It Starts, What to Expect, and How Long It Lasts

Teething is a major developmental milestone in your baby’s first year and often a source of worry for parents. Understanding when teething starts, what symptoms are normal, and how long the process lasts can help you feel more prepared and confident.

When Does Teething Start?

Most babies begin teething between 4 and 7 months, though some may start as early as 3 months or as late as 12 months. The first teeth to appear are usually the lower central incisors, followed by the upper front teeth.

Common Teething Symptoms

Typical signs of teething include:

Increased drooling Swollen or tender gums Chewing on hands or objects Mild fussiness or irritability Slight changes in sleep patterns

These symptoms may come and go as different teeth erupt.

How Long Does Teething Last?

Teething is not a one-time event. It continues until your child has all 20 primary (baby) teeth, usually by age 2½ to 3 years. Each tooth may cause discomfort for a few days before and after it emerges.

What’s Normal vs Not Normal

Mild discomfort is normal, but high fever, persistent diarrhea, or severe irritability are not caused by teething and should be assessed by a doctor.

Supporting Your Baby Through Teething

Providing comfort through gentle gum massage, teething toys, and extra cuddles can make a big difference. Remember, teething is temporary, and your baby will get through it with your support.
